Building an Author Brand: A Masterclass

What is author branding—and why does it matter? From mission and values to color palettes and typography, this masterclass breaks down every moving part of brand development so you can stop getting lost in the marketing gumbo and start building something that actually looks, sounds, and feels like you.

There. SEO done. Let’s dive in.

I'm going to be coming at you hard and fast with some marketing rules during this masterclass. Truth be told, there's a lot that goes into brand development—blood, sweat, tears, research, logo drafts, color palette swatches, hours of keyword and tagline research and testing. It's a lot. Even for a company that does this. So, I'm going to break this down into its core moving parts so you can take the first step on your brand journey.

But first, let me answer the most important question:

Why is Branding Important?

Branding is more than just aesthetics, or uniformity across social media platforms (though it can be loosely described that way). Branding is your identity—it's what makes you recognizable, relatable, and most importantly, marketable. In short, it's the difference between being known for something or getting lost in the sauce.

Sure, visuals play an integral part, but pretty packages don't mean anything if there's nothing substantial inside.

As an author, your branding isn't just about products or ad campaigns. It's about you as a person and the stories you write. If your branding is strong, people will know, on sight, if this is a post from you or about your books. It can help separate you from other authors out there, so you don't get lost in the marketing gumbo.

So, What Is Branding?

I'm so glad you asked, young padawan. Branding can be broken down into the following categories:

Anatomy of a Brand

  • Foundation

    • Mission/Vision

    • Values

    • Unique Value Proposition (UVP)

  • Audience

  • Identity

    • Voice

    • Story

    • Tagline

    • Visual Identity

      • Colors

      • Typography

      • Logo

Lost? Don't Worry, We'll Break It Down a Bit Further . . .
