Our Uncle’s Promise
An LGBTQIA* Memoir
by Ruta Levu
What does a rabid squirrel with active rabies, a turkey demon from hell, and a unicorn that farts rainbows have in common? Absolutely nothing, unless they are family.
In this nonfiction LGBTQ+ family memoir, four young sisters lose their mother and are raised by their maternal grandparents and two gay uncles in the 1970's and 1980's.
Grandma was the glue that held everyone together, enforced Sunday family dinners, and family togetherness. Pop was the quiet enforcer and a loving grandfather. Uncle Rueben was the fun-loving uncle and taught his nieces to laugh again and disco dance. Uncle Dana was the quieter uncle, but he was always willing to join in the adventures with the nieces, whether it was going to numerous street festivals or riding roller coasters and screaming louder than the girls.
Sina, the rabid squirrel with active rabies, was part of the morning troll clan, but played her part as the older sister, nag in charge, grump meister and motherly protector. Ruta, the unicorn that farts rainbows, was just a joy and spread her glittery joy over mankind. The two younger sisters were the supporting cast for the unicorn that farts rainbows... not really, but what can you say about younger sisters, except that they can be adorable but still annoying? As for Pierre, the turkey demon from hell, you will have to read the book.
This compelling story is about a family that did not fit the normal template of the 1970's and 1980's yet shows everything a family should be. This gripping memoir is a true story of family, faith, queer parenting, unconditional love, coming out, coming of age, resilience, and a tender tribute to love as a daily practice and a promise kept.
An unconventional queer family with unconditional love.
