Marketability Assessment for Indie Authors

Is your book reaching the right readers—and giving them the right expectations?

A strong story can be difficult to market when its cover, blurb, and promotional language are sending different signals. Hawthorn & Aster’s Marketability Assessment takes a focused look at how your book is presented, where its appeal comes through clearly, and what you could refine before investing further in promotion.

This service is designed for indie and self-published authors with a book in development, approaching release, or already published. Hawthorn & Aster works across romance, fantasy, science fiction, and general fiction, with particular depth in romance and its subgenres.

Before your session, you’ll submit a short synopsis, your current cover or cover concept, your blurb, and any existing retailer or promotional materials you’d like us to consider. We’ll review how those pieces work together, then meet with you for a one-hour conversation about your book’s positioning and practical next steps.

We can discuss:

  • The readers your current presentation is likely to attract

  • Cover and blurb alignment with genre expectations

  • Your book’s clearest selling points

  • Trope language and how accurately it represents the story

  • Potential gaps or mixed signals in your marketing

  • Changes to prioritize before launch or further promotion

After the call, you’ll receive a short written Marketability Assessment Report (PDF) summarizing what’s working, where readers may encounter confusion, and our recommended next steps.

What’s Included

  • Review of your submitted book and marketing materials

  • 60-minute, one-on-one assessment call

  • Written report with prioritized recommendations

Please note: This assessment reviews how your book is presented to potential readers; it does not include a full manuscript read, cover redesign, or blurb rewrite. If you’d like detailed feedback on the story itself, manuscript evaluation is available as a separate service. No assessment can guarantee sales, but it can give you a clearer direction for reaching the readers most likely to connect with your book.
